With photocopiers, decks and work stations on landings and stairwells, (the escape routes for staff and customers, ) and as many as 3 desks per office every inch of space is taken up. The fire officer with some justification read the riot act to the owner and demanded some action to make the workplace safer. In the end the owner preferred to invest in a fire sprinkler system and the fire officer was persuaded to accept this provided all routes and all offices were covered. We did the installation out of hours over two weekends and the pump, pressure vessel and other equipment are under the stairs in the basement. The cost to the client of some £ 13,000 was considerably less than the cost to relocate and they have a safer environment to work in now. |
