Fire Protection in Loft Conversions

Advice for builders and loft conversion specialists

The revisions to part B of the building regulations now allow building control officers (BCO’s) and other authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ’s) the flexibility of allowing loft conversions without forming an enclosed corridor escape route at ground floor level where the staircase opens into a habitable room such as a lounge or dining room.
The customer can now have their loft converted without loosing valuable space on the ground floor and suffering the disruption of construction work in their lounge. Usually the owners are in residence and this aspect has been a major source of conflict where the loft conversion specialist has disrupted normal family life.
