Fire suppression systems include wet, dry and alternate traditional sprinkler systems as well as more unusual water mist applications for limited uses such as plant rooms engine rooms and other confined and enclosed areas.
Other bespoke suppression systems include gas powder and foam suppressant which variously smother fires with different propellants and combustible materials.
The decision on the type of suppressant to be used is based upon the potential damage to the material being protected and the area the suppression needs to perform in.
For example a computer server room would be a small usually air conditioned room quite well sealed and would be best served by a nitrogen armed suppression system.
This will cause no damage to equipment other than that which has ignited. Wet or mist installations would be inappropriate in such conditions.
Volatile materials such as ink or thinner stores where highly flammable material is present may be better suppressed by foam enhanced systems and on a larger scale tank farms with highly flammable materials present are certainly best suppressed with AFFF systems which are water based foam enhanced installations.
There are environmental drawbacks to all suppressants including water and careful consideration to run off needs to be given when considering the most appropriate method of introducing suppression to fire risks.
